Scenario 1: Kits that include multiple components
Below is a chart that will serve as a scenario example. Please refer to the following options based on your current barcode situation:
1. If you have already barcoded some items:
Option #1: If you are currently uniquely barcoding only kits (e.g., Asset tag 102002, Science Kit), you can create those kits as serialized assets. You can also use notes to add component information.
Option #2: If you have barcoded some components and are using unique barcodes for them, but do not barcode consumables, you can add these barcoded assets as serialized assets. Consumables can be tracked separately as consumable assets to monitor their quantity. For example:
Serialized Assets:
Asset tag 123: Who is a Scientist Poster
Asset tag 1010: Foam Spheres
Consumables:
Short paper strips, quantity = 100
2. If you do not barcode anything but are willing to start:
Use the same approach as above:
Option #1: Barcode only kits.
Option #2: Barcode some components without barcoding consumables.
3. If you do not barcode anything and do not wish to barcode anything:
You can create all components as generic or consumable assets and simply keep track of the items. This corresponds to Option #3.

If you currently uniquely barcode only kits (Asset tag 102002, Science Kit), you can create those items (kits) as serialized assets and use notes to add component information.
In this case, you will add a unique barcode and distribute the entire kit as a single asset. This means you will create a single serialized asset in the system, give it an asset tag (e.g., 12345), call it “SCIENCE KIT,” and add the rest of the data as custom fields or notes.
