iiQ Resources - FAQ: What is the difference between a Serialized and Non-Serialized Assets?

Serialized assets (These are barcoded assets; each asset has a unique barcode).

  • There is one record in the system per item (e.g., Texas Instruments TI-84 PLUS CE Graphing Calculator, asset tag TI000001).

  • A serialized asset has a dedicated status, location, and owner. It also has purchase and cost tracking information.

  • When checking out, there is no need to specify the quantity.

Generic assets and consumables (These are non-serialized assets, don’t have a unique barcode, may have the same barcode on all assets, or don’t have any barcodes at all.)

Think about a grocery store, where all Granny Smith apples share the same barcode but are sold either by the pound or by quantity.

  • One asset tag is used for all inventory.

  • No dedicated location or owner.

  • When checking out, you need to specify the quantity and the location from which you are checking out the assets.

Please note that Asset Tag and Inventory Tag are used interchangeably within all iiQ products.
